Black, White and Barn

Coat was a gift from Chris || Black Skinny Jeans from Uniqlo in New York City || White Blouse from Joe Fresh || Hush Puppies Boots || Blue Earrings c/o t + j designs

Yesterday, Independent Fashion Bloggers had a post about how to avoid going into debt as a style blogger. The premise being that most of us feel quite a bit of pressure to be on top of trends, buy big labels, get the stuff we see on other blogs and bloggers. I can see how this would lead some bloggers to spending beyond their means. In this regard I feel relieved and exempt from that pressure. I've put my frugality right in the forefront, I'm not somebody who is going to break the bank to participate in a trend.

How about you? Bloggers and other mortals - do you feel pressure to be on top of trends? Do you spend beyond your means on your wardrobe? This is a non-judgement zone - you can be honest. :)

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Great shoes hun :) Buying just for blogging is a bit much in my opinion. It is about re styling what you have :)

  2. I love this coat! (Ok, now that's out of the way....) I definitely feel the pressure as a style blogger, but I think in a slightly different manner. Problem one is that I love shopping. Problem two is when I see something that I love that's affordable and I don't have something similar, then I really want to buy it. I'm not much for high end designers or super expensive pieces of clothing because I can't afford that. It's the affordable stuff that's the most dangerous! And I never actually spend beyond my means, but I definitely could put the money to better use elsewhere (cough, cough, student debt). It's a struggle for me every single day, and I'm still learning to deal with it!

  3. I'm definitely with Jamie on this one! It's not so much the expensive stuff, but more when you see an affordable version of a hot trend/ something you've been crushing on.
But my way of doing it is to just go on a shopping detox every now and then for a couple of months, so that I can really sit back and dig deep into my closet. And also save some money for better quality/ costlier stuff!

  11. As a new-to-the-game personal style blogger who's whole premise is about thrifting and upcycling, it sort of startled me to think that some style bloggers might feel pressured into spending beyond their means for the "latest look". I think the real creativity, and many of the most exciting looks, happen when you don't spend a lot. Not that spending is intrinsically bad if you can afford it, but if you can't? Find a way to make something out of (almost) nothing.

I agree that the medium to inexpensive stuff is the hardest to forgo on impulsive shopping binges. One way I deal with that is to never, ever carry a credit card. I also try really hard not to go into the stores that I know will tempt me when I don't "need" anything.

  13. Classic outfit. I'm not one to break the bank either for fashion. I love altering old clothes and making it new. Getting hand me downs are also a plus.

  15. First off, love the earrings. And, yes, I used to be more of a fashion blogger on meganbarkley.blogspot.com. Now, I focus on my love, which is woodburned fine art (http://nauticalowl.blogspot.com/) But, when I was a fashion blogger, I didn't do it every day. I maybe posted an outfit once a week, which is usually about as much as I hit up the thrift stores. You have to stay humble and live within your means.
