When One Door Closes + More Girls on HBO

I first talked about the new HBO series Girls in this post. So I watched the second episode of Girls and I really liked it. The writing is sharp, and Lena Dunham (the creator, writer, director and lead actress of the show) has great timing, fantastic wit, and a direct approach on sexuality. While some of it makes me cringe and want to reach for the remote out of sheer embarrassment, I'm definitely enjoying it. And truth be told, I want to enjoy it, I'm making the choice to enjoy it, because I'm so frustrated by how nasty and vicious and personal some of the attacks on her and the show have been. The ridiculous expectation that she's supposed to represent all "girls" on this show is crazy.  It's ONE show about FOUR girls (so far). We can all decide which ones we relate to the most, or dislike least, but it's one story - just let her tell this one story well - which is what she's doing.

Thanks for stopping by.

  8. I haven't read any criticism of the show .. so its very interesting. I think she's a genius. Its cringe worthy because so many of us have been there. She really has captured that crazy time of being free in your early 20s and feeling like an adult but not being quite sure of what that means.. To be able to nab that idea so fully and develop a show around it is genius!

  14. I haven't seen the show, but I can see how it would be an easy target for criticism. I agree with you, how can one story encompass everyone's story? Great thoughts to share. I love your casual chic look - that colour looks fantastic on you!

  16. Love the outfit (like usual!) And I love Girls, even though I've only seen the first episode. I find it very relatable, and I can't understand why there is so much criticism against it.

  20. I have read some criticisms about the show not being diverse enough, but I agree with you, it's one girl's story, why does it have to be every girls' story?!

  23. Everyone romanticizes life in NY, even some of us living there ;) I've had countless precious moments on the train or while walking down the street that I know I'll never experience anywhere else in the world so I understand why you'd like to live here. I hope you do move out here one day, I'm certain you and your style would be a great asset to NY.

I've yet to check out this GIRLS show, everyone is talking about it. Also, I love the way you effortlessly incorporate desi tunics into your many of your outfits, it always turns out so lovely.

  27. I love your blouse, and I think all programing on HBO can get a little cringe-worthy from time to time. it's all about being over the top just for the sake of it.

  32. (1) LOVE the outfit (and the photos), as always. If you're looking to pick up work as a freelance stylist, I might be in the market for a makeover! LOL.

    (2) RE: Girls. I *just* watched the first episode. But it was with some trepidation, because I've read a few articles that are quite critical of the show. That said, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But I'm not sure I'd call it "the voice of a generation" ... plus: where are all the people of colour! Hipsters come in many shades! LOL.
