Inspiration: The Mark

I don't actually wear glasses, but this post is dedicated to my dear friend Mark Ulster, who does wear glasses. Mark and I have worked together for about 6 years. A few days ago Mark quit his job to move on to a fantastic new position with another news agency. So this post is inspired by him. And while Mark gets some grief for his 'look', he most definitely has a distinct style which I have tried to re-interpret and honour here.

Jackson 5 T-shirt: Gift from Chris; Men's Plaid Shirt: Dad's; Jeans: Smart Set; Anne Klein Shoes: thrifted; Belt: H&M; Gold Hoops: Saskatoon
The key to Mark's look is always a graphic T-shirt, with a plaid long sleeved shirt on top, usually with jeans, and then he has his favourite sneakers that have a hit of red.
Mark is a gritty guy, so we wanted a canvas that reflected his 1980's New York loving, rebellious student style.

This T-shirt is symbolic for a few reasons. 1. Mark always wears a graphic T-shirt. 2. Mark is a (wee bit of a) musical snob and generally prefers old school R'n B and Blues music. 3. Mark's youngest daughter Kate is a phenomenal singer and he often compares her natural talent to that of a young Michael Jackson. 4. When MJ died, I was completely devastated so Chris got this shirt made for me.

And I absolutely had to include this picture. While I was getting into position, this gentleman walked up to me and said "Wow! Look at those shoes!" He then told me that they used to have high heels 50 years ago, and his sister used to wear shoes like that but she doesn't wear them anymore. I loved this exchange, this little sartorial history lesson, and a trip down someone else's memory lane. All thanks to a pair of shiny shoes.

And just in case some of you doubt Mark's look. Here it is below. Did I honour it well?

Best of luck Mark in this new adventure, I know you are going to do great things!

  5. this outfit is so fun... i love band tees paired with cool denim and fancy high heels.

  6. Very cute jacket! And I kind of love when old people tell random stories like that haha

  7. The last picture made me laugh out loud. The way you translated a man's style into a woman's style was very creative.
