Dagna's 'Styl'

Dagna is a journalist, musician, colleague and friend. And this is her gorgeous elephant bracelet.

'Styl' is Polish for Style, or at least that's what my free online translator told me, and Dagna is full of 'styl'.
We're working together on the new CBC Radio show 'Promised Land' but it's hard to concentrate at work because she insists on wearing awesome accessories.

Summer Blooms

The heat is oppressive outside, but it's nice to remember what the summer brings.

I've known these gorgeous girls since we were all in grade school. Farah, Samina, and Tahmina Omar. Keeping Ottawa stylish.

Tiny Mic

I'm working on a new show for CBC Radio called Promised Land - it's all about escape stories to Canada.
It's a lot of work, a lot of fun and pretty inspiring. This tiny old fashioned CBC mic pin is a gift from a friend, a wish for good luck for our new show.

Malcolm's Glasses

When I asked this lovely lady to strike a pose, it was her glasses that jumped out at me right away - those quintessential Malcolm X glasses. Is it just a coincidence that today is Malcolm X's birthday?

'Girl with Cur'?

This girl looks great and I'm glad I asked to take her picture. But now, I wish I had paid attention to what it says on her shirt. What do you think? 'Girl with Curls' or 'Girl with Curves' or 'Girl with Cure'?

Strutting Scottish

My friend Angie's new shoes from her recent trip to Scotland, purchased at a store called 'Ness.'
As much as I love these shoes, it's a little worrisome how perfectly they match our work space carpeting.

Spring 2010 Clothing Show ....Part 1

Here are a few shots from the Spring 2010 Clothing Show - a  showcase of over 300 local artists, designers and stylish peeps.  There's tons of new designs to enjoy, plus a heap of vintage stuff to get lost in.

This blazer is part of collection, giving a nod to one of the greatest books of all time
'Alice in Wonderland.'

Just one of the many vintage clothing, shoes and jewellery stalls.

This woman has her own jewellery line, but also has an awesome collection of vintage party wear.

WHIT LOOKBOOK

Some inspiration from Whit in NYC.

Mom's Dutch Slippers

Some people are too good for hand-me-downs. Not me. My mom picked up these cute red flats, that have an oxford sort of thing going on, last year when she was in Amsterdam. I drooled when she brought them home. Today she asked if I wanted them, and so I snapped them up. Looking forward to clicking my ruby heels together soon.

Finnish Coat

This whole look is great, and happy, and the star of the show - the yellow coat is a 1960's raincoat from Finland. I think it's time to book a trip to Helsinki.

Also, lately I've become completely obsessed with tights. Colours, textures, patterns, my eye is always drawn to 'em. So imagine my excitement when I saw these lovely, blue floral ones.

Red Bike

Why is it that the most stylish people in this city are always on bicycles? It makes it really challenging to snap that candidate photo. Thankfully this woman obeys the traffic signal.

Looking for Change

When I approached this woman to take her picture, she was reluctant because she said someone else had taken a picture of her and posted it online and she hated it. But she said as long as she didn't have to look at the camera I could take her pic. Hopefully, this picture leaves her with a happier impression.

Big City, Small World. Big Style, Awesome Girl.

Garvia Bailey is the host of 'Big City, Small World' on CBC Radio 1.
Her eclectic taste is reflected in the music and musicians she features on her show, and fortunately for us - also in her personal style.

Listen to Garvia each week at http://www.cbc.ca/bigcitysmallworld/

Here she is with friend/colleague/trouble maker Chris Howden

a-ha Moments

The pop band a-ha from Norway shot to fame in 1985 with their hit "Take on Me." Who could forget that incredible, ground-breaking video that mixed animation with real life action? But after 25 years, 9 successful albums and touring the world, the band is calling it quits. Last night they performed in Toronto as part of the farewell tour.  It was an absolutely fantastic night. Here are some the a-ha moments.

Coffee Break

If it's freezing cold on a May morning, this is a good way to keep Spring in the air.

I love the military style stars on the coat.

Charlotte's Charms

Yum. Don't these creations by my young friend Charlotte look delicious? As delectable as they may appear, you can't eat them because these cakes are made out of Fimo - a brand of polymer clay. And they're super tiny. Have a look at the picture below with a penny placed in front of the cakes to give you a sense of scale.

Aren't these incredible? Look at the amount of detail.

Donuts, chocolate chip cookies, ice cream sandwiches, sushi, bacon and eggs and again there's a penny there for scale. And since we always have to have a bit style in the traditional sense, check out these great handbags Charlotte made.

Lovely stuff Charlotte.
